JMM demands roll back of VAT hike on diesel
February 14th, 2010 - 11:46 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Feb 14 (IANS) Jharkhand’s ruling Jharkhand MUkti Morcha (JMM) Sunday demanded the government roll back the 5.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on diesel, which takes its price up by Rs.2 per litre in the state.
“We request to state government to review its decision to hike VAT. The state government should consider rolling back VAT, considering the rising prices of essential commodities,” JMM legislator and Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s son Hemant Soren told reporters here after the party’s central committee meeting.
When pointed out that his party was ruling the state, he said the party functions differently from the government.
The Jharkhand cabinet Wednesday hiked VAT on diesel from 14.5 percent to 20 per cent, hoping to generate an additional Rs.150 crore per annum from the measure.
The Congress and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajantantrik (JVM-P) have hit the streets to protest the state cabinet’s decision.
