Havana, Mar 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Former US President Jimmy Carter is on a mission to Cuba to help ease tensions between the country and the United States. It is also expected that Carter would try to secure the release of an American contractor who was recently jailed 15 years for providing illegal Internet access in the communist country.

Carter touched down in the Cuban capital on Monday accompanied by his wife, Rosalynn. Carter was met at the Jose Marti International Airport in Havana by a government delegation led by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

Carter met with the leaders of the Jewish Community of Cuba on Monday. He is scheduled to hold a high profile meeting with the president of Cuba, Raul Castro on Tuesday. Carter is the highest ranking US politician to visit Cuba since the revolution in 1959.

The Carter Center on Friday gave some details about Carter’s trip. The center announced that the former president would discuss bilateral talks between US and Cuba. He would also hold a meeting on the upcoming Sixth Congress of the Cuban Communist Party.

The Carter Center maintains that the trip was not a government mission and remains purely private.
