Washington, Mar 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In a recent move that has sent waves in the US Political circle, Republican senator Jim Bunning has blocked a legislation that was supposed to extend health insurance and unemployment benefits to almost a million Americans who are out of job. He has blocked the attempts of Senate’s Democratic leadership to pass the bill that would have resulted in the extension of payments. As a result, he was greeted with abusive calls from angry workers who even threatened to bomb his office in Kentucky. The senator remains unaffected though and he has said that he would not change his stand on this issue.
As a result of his blocking the bill, almost 2000 construction employees have been sent back to home, who were engaged in developing road projects. The main reason for which senator Jim Bunning blocked the bill was addition to the deficit. He used some measures to delay the bill and now it looks like that a new vote would be taken on it in the coming days. The senator who used to be a baseball player in his youth, blocked the bill almost single handedly. He also argued that he would not let the bill pass as the Democrats have not explained how they would pay for it.
As one can expect, the democrats have lashed out at him for his opposition to the bill with some of them saying that his move will take a toll on common people. The Democrats are also planning to use this act against the Republicans in the upcoming campaigns.
