Jharkhand records over 58 percent vote in five phases

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) Jharkhand witnessed over 58 percent polling in the staggered five-phase assembly elections, the last of which was held Friday, the Election Commission said here.
“The overall poll percentage is 58.3 percent. It will go up,” said Ashok Shukla, the deputy election commissioner, here.

He said the last phase of the polling saw some minor incidents of violence with two security officials killed. The polling percentage till 3 p.m. was 58.13 percent.

“In today’s election, the polling percentage was 58.13. It is likely to go up. It will add to the overall poll percentage,” Shukla told reporters.

“Two security officials were killed in Friday’s polling in two separate landmine blasts,” Shukla said.

Maoist rebels triggered landmine blasts in two places and blew up two schools and a small bridge. The first landmine blast took place near Mahur village in Palamau district. In the incident, head constable Satyendra Singh died and two security personnel were injured.

In the second landmine blast, which took place at Chhota Nagra village in West Singhbhum district, one police official was killed.

The five-phase polls began Nov 25 for the 81-seat assembly.
