Jessica murder: Apex court reject’s Manu’s plea
August 10th, 2010 - 10:20 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by Sidharth Vashisht alias Manu Sharma seeking a review of its verdict in which it upheld the life sentence awarded to him for murdering ramp model Jessica Lal in 1999.
An apex court bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Swatanter Kumar dismissed the review petition saying that there was “no merit” in the plea.
The court said that the petition was being dismissed on the same grounds on which Manu Sharma’s appeal challenging the high court verdict was dismissed.
The court observed that there was no ground to interfere with its April 19, 2010 verdict as his guilt was proved beyond reasonable doubt.
Son of Venod Sharma - a senior Congress leader from Haryana, Manu Sharma was the prime accused in Jessica murder.
He was acquitted by the trial court but the high court reversed the acquittal and awarded him life imprisonment.
He challenged the high court decision in the Supreme Court which upheld the verdict.
The apex court also dismissed the review petition of Amardeep Singh Gill alias Tony Gill and that of Vikas Yadav, son of controversial Uttar Pradesh politician D.P. Yadav, who were awarded four years’ sentence each for destroying evidence.
At the time of committing the offence, Tony Gill was an MNC executive.
