Japan’s PM Hatoyama to resigns after eight months in office
June 2nd, 2010 - 4:44 pm ICT by BNO NewsTOKYO (BNO NEWS) — Japan’s Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Wednesday said he will step down, taking responsibility for losing public trust in the government after a party left the ruling coalition over his mishandling of the relocation of a U.S. base in Okinawa.
During his campaign, Hatoyama vowed to move the U.S. Futenma Air Base off Okinawa but after eight months, he capitulated to Washington demands. The Social Democratic Party left the coalition government on Sunday.
Hatoyama apologized to the islanders for breaking his promise, but he suffered loss in popularity over the decision.
