Jaitley spearheads BJP’s Delhi poll campaign
November 6th, 2008 - 9:44 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS) Aiming to wrest power in Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Partry (BJP) has turned to its general secretary Arun Jaitley, who helped the party win in Gujarat and Karnataka, for conducting its election campaign in the capital.Jaitley arrived at the Delhi BJP headquarters Thursday morning and took stock of the preparations for polls.
Party sources said he was closely monitoring the party’s position in every assembly seat.
Jaitley, known for his hands-on approach and acumen for strategy with an eye on the ground realty, met a score of party leaders.
Senior party leaders said his immediate task is to control the damage done by those hopefuls who have turned to rebellion after being denied the party tickets.
Unlike in the past, the state BJP is facing a tough time with its own party leaders holding demonstrations and venting out their ire publicly.
Jaitley has handled similar situations in Karnataka as well as Gujarat where dissidents had threatened to spoil the party’s chances.
“We have a similar situation here, the party is on the backfoot due to a large number of dissidents. But we have confidence that Jaitley would be able to handle it,” a state BJP leader said.
The sources said that in the next few days Jaitley would personally supervise poll preparations in all the 66 constituencies where the BJP would be contesting - it has allocated four seats to ally Akali Dal.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national secretary Sukhbir Panwar joined the BJP Thursday and met the press in the presence of Jaitley, Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan and the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Vijay Kumar Malhotra.
Panwar said: “There is no other party besides the BJP that can bring development to the city.”
