Jairam Ramesh visits Maoist-affected Bastar region
November 10th, 2011 - 11:20 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, Nov 10 (IANS) Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh Thursday visited Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, a Maoist hotbed since late 1980s, and held a meeting with officials on pushing development.
The minister reportedly told the officials that his department was determined to provide increased funds for construction of roads in the region, which has witnessed a string of deadly Maoists attacks in recent years.
Before leaving for the troubled Bastar region, the minister said in state capital Raipur that at least 1,000 km of concrete roads would be constructed in Chhattisgarh’s 10 rebel-affected districts.
“I think rural development works can play a key role in Maoist-hit areas, in fact, ensuring development in rural hinterland in Maoist belts is a kind of psychological war against the Leftist rebels. The battle against the Maoists should not be left only to police and para-military,” he said.
