Jailed Jharkhand legislator withdraws resignation letter
April 26th, 2010 - 7:34 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, April 26 (IANS) A four-day-long drama over jailed ex-Maoist leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislator Polush Surin’s move to quit the Jharkhand assembly ended Monday when he withdrew a resignation letter sent to speaker C.P. Singh.
“Surin has withdrawn his resignation letter. I had sent a messenger to Simdega jail to confirm the withdrawal of the resignation letter,” the speaker told reporters here Monday.
The legislator is in jail for the last one-and-a-half years. He was arrested for being a member of Maoist organization People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI).
The legislator representing Torpa constituency had sent the resignation letter to the speaker four days ago in a bid to facilitate JMM chief and Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s election from his seat.
Soren who became chief minister on Dec 30, 2009 is not a member of the assembly. He has time till June 30 to become a legislator to be eligible to hold on to the top post.
A JMM central committee meeting held Sunday night decided that Soren would not fight an election from Torpa seat as it is not considered as a safe seat.
After the party meeting, Soren met the speaker. According to JMM sources, Soren requested the speaker not to accept Surin’s resignation.
