smithLondon, May 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Jacqui Smith, the former Home Secretary of Britain who had to resign from her post following the expenses scandal which rocked the political circuit in the British Parliament last year, lost her seat today in Redditch to a Tory candidate, Karen Lumley. The 47 year old politician was among the firsts to get involved in the Parliament expenses scandal in 2009. Jacqui Smith then had to quit her candidature in the month June.

Jacqui Smith was one of the female MPs who were recruited in the Tony Blair government back in the year 1997. She witnessed a very fast rise in position within the British Parliament, and went on to become the first female Home Secretary in the Gordon Brown government in the year 2007. However today the former MP did not reveal any feeling nor did she show any change of expression after losing to the Tory candidate.

Jacqui Smith was forced to step down from her post of Home Secretary when it came to light that she along with many other MPs had been squandering the government’s money for private expenditure. Several thousand pounds of public money was lost when the MP spent them for various purposes starting from purchase of flat screen televisions to repairs of tennis courts. The MP was further humiliated for her alleged cable television package which included two adult movies. The MP and her husband had to offer a public apology after the incident was reported in various media. Having already been involved in a high-profile scandal, Jacqui Smith was calm on the face of defeat today.
