Jack Layton dies at the age of 61
August 23rd, 2011 - 12:29 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattToronto, Aug 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Canadian inspirational politician Jack Layton has lost his battle against cancer. He was 61. On 25th of July, Layton announced that he was stepping down as the leader of the opposition New Democratic Party so that he can concentrate on his fight against cancer. During the announcement, Layton revealed his optimism to recover from the sickness.
On Monday, Layton’s widow, Olivia Chow announced in a statement that, “He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones.”
Layton is credited for inspiring the strong performance of the NDP party in the Canadian polls on the 2nd of May. His political style is praised for being down-to-earth.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed his condolence to the family of Layton. Harper said that, “On behalf of all Canadians, I salute Jack’s contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed. I know one thing: Jack gave his fight against cancer everything he had. Indeed, Jack never backed down from any fight.”
Mourners continued to pay their tributes to the late politician. Flowers were placed in the Toronto home of Layton. Candles were also lit at the house and his constituency office in Danforth as well.
