IUML activist killed in police firing in Kerala
November 15th, 2009 - 11:15 pm ICT by IANSKasargode (Kerala), Nov 15 (IANS) An Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activist was killed Sunday as police opened fire to disperse a rioting mob in Kerala’s Kasaragod district.
The deceased has been identified as K.Shefik.
The IUML was holding a reception to its leaders in the city and a large number of their supporters were present.
P.Karunakaran, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP from Kasargode, claimed IUML activists went berserk, tearing down party flags and banners of other parties, forcing the small police force present to resist and then everything went out of control.
However, IUML’s youth wing chief, K.Shaji said he came to know party activists faced stone throwing from some quarters.
Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan confirmed that the police had opened fire.
“We have asked Inspector General of Police Mahesh Kumar Singla to reach the place at the earliest. Additional police forces are moving to the place also,” he said.
