Iraq Sentences Former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz To Death

Oct 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) President Saddam Hussein’s close adviser and former Foreign Minister of Iraq, Tariq Aziz has been sentenced to death by the government. Tariq Aziz has been sentenced to death by the Iraqi High Tribunal for playing a prominent role in eliminating religious parties during the time of Saddam Hussain’s regime. Judge Mahmoud Saleh al-Hasan said that the Iraq government found the former Deputy Prime Minister as guilty of “deliberate” murder and crimes against humanity.
Tariq Aziz’s family was shocked to hear the news and his daughter Zainab Aziz said that the family had no idea that Tariq Aziz will be sentenced to death. She said to reputed media source that Tariq Aziz served Iraq for mire than 22 years and he never did anything wrong in his career. However, she also added that her father was “wronged”. Tariq Aziz’s attorney Badi Arif told that he finds political motif behind the death sentence of the former Foreign Minister and called it an “illegal” and “unexpected” sentence. The attorney said that Tariq Aziz used to say that the Government will someday will find a way to kill him and he would not be able to escape the situation.
On the other hand Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said in his statement that the Catholic Church opposes the death penalty, especially to favor the “reconciliation” and “reconstruction” of “peace and justice” in Iraq after all the “suffering” it has gone through over the years. Even the Amnesty International opposed the death penalty and urged the Government not to execute it.The media outlets reported that when Saddam Hussein ousted from his post Tariq Aziz became the most hated of all the officials as he was the staunch supporter of Saddam Hussain.
