UN General AssemblyAug 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Iranian government has denied that that there was an assassination attempt on their President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. According to one of the Iranian news websites, however, a man threw a grenade at the convoy of the president as it was passing through the city of Hamedan. The attacker had reportedly cried ‘death to the hypocrites’ before he lobbed the bomb around 100 yards from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s car.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s office has denied the news completely and said that an onlooker threw merely a firecracker. The conservative Iranian news website, on the other hand, has claimed that a man was arrested from the spot immediately. The president was unharmed by the attack and went on to give a speech at a local sports stadium where he addressed a large crowd. The report said that the explosion caused a lot of smoke. Another media has also reported the explosion but the other details of the report do not match the one by the Iranian website.

The conflicting reports from the entire media in Iran has made the episode look more suspicious and it became a hot search on the web. With issues like tightened UN and Western Sanctions over Tehran’s Nuclear program and a weakening economy, President Ahmadinejad is regularly seen addressing the grass root supporters across the nation. He therefore travels to several towns and cities across Iran is often greeted with firecrackers and other eager supporters. An English broadcast arm of the state-run press TV has reported that a source from inside the President’s office has vehemently denied any assassination attempt on the President.
