Manmohan Singh New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) The Indian government said Thursday it was probing if foreign money was fuelling the anti-nuclear protests in Tamil Nadu.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) V. Narayanasamy told the Rajya Sabha that some NGOs had been identified but said they will not be named while the investigation is on.

“CBI inquiry against two NGOs have been ordered. Two criminal cases have been referred to Tamil Nadu Police for investigation,” Narayanasamy said.

“Detailed investigation will reveal the source of funding and the expenditure pattern of these NGOs that are opposing the Kudankulam nuclear power project,” he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month blamed American and Scandivanian NGOs for backing protests in Tamil Nadu.

Narayanasamy said that preliminary reports suggest that NGOs working in and and around Kudankulam and involved in the protests against the nuclear plant were being funded by certain countries.
