Indefinite auto strike in Delhi from Wednesday
May 17th, 2011 - 10:22 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 17 (IANS) Protesting against the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) in the auto-rickshaws, some of the auto unions in the capital are set to launch indefinite strike from Wednesday.
“We are against the installation of GPS. We are going on strike from tomorrow (Wednesday),” Shobran Singh, a member of Bharatiya Tipaya Chalak Sangh, said Tuesday.
The auto-rickshaw unions and the Delhi transport department have been at loggerheads over the installation of GPS devices, with the unions demanding that the cost of the device be slashed and annual rentals waived.
The unions which have announced to go on strike include Bharatiya Tipaya Chalak Sangh and Nyay Path Auto Drivers Welfare Association.
The Nyay Path Auto Drivers Welfare Association Tuesday burnt the effigies of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely over the decision to install GPS in auto-rickshaws.
The government wants the capital’s auto-rickshaws to fit the GPS, as it will enable two-way communication system that will also help check speeding, route deviations and ensure safety of the commuters.
