Illegal Aliens Called ‘Drug Mules’ By Arizona Governor, Controversy Sparks

jana June 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The governor of Arizona has once again managed to stir up controversy in the fight for an immigration law ,which was designed to uphold the federal law against illegal immigration, this time for a comment that she made in which she referred to most illegal immigrants as “drug mules.”

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer took a stand against illegal immigration for her state when she passed the “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” which makes it illegal to be in the United States without documentation showing that you are in the country by legal means, essentially, making illegal aliens…illegal.

In addition the law states that police officers can ask questionable persons for proof that they are not illegally in the US, but only after said person has been involved in suspicious activity, such as driving with no licence, etc. The law has sparked a lot of controversy from those who feel it encourages racial profiling.

Others insist that the law is needed, since there have been so many crimes which were perpetrated in the US by those who were not in the country by legal means, including the murder of a rancher, Robert Krentz, 58, on his own land by an illegal alien. The area in which he was killed is a known drug smuggling corridor, according to local police. Those in support of the bill also state that the border is an open way for terrorists and drug cartels to travel in and out of America.

It was such a statement that has, once again, landed the governor in hot water. The following statement, which she made on Friday, has been met with much controversy. “Well, we all know that the majority of the people that are coming to Arizona and trespassing are now becoming drug mules,” Governor Brewer said.

“They’re coming across our borders in huge numbers. The drug cartels have taken control of the immigration. So they are criminals. They’re breaking the law when they are trespassing and they’re criminals when they pack the marijuana and the drugs on their backs,” Governor Brewer said. There’s strong information to us that they come as illegal people wanting to come to work, then they are accosted and they become subjects of the drug cartel.”

A University of Arizona professor, Oscar Martinez, was offended by the remarks and challenged her words, “Unless Gov. Brewer can provide hard data to substantiate her claim that most undocumented people crossing into Arizona are drug mules, she must retract such an outrageous statement.” Governor Brewer stands by her comments and has so far refused to retract them. Governor Brewer can be seen making her statement in the video embedded below.
