I am framed up to save somebody high up: Uttar Pradesh legislatorJanuary 7th, 2009 - 9:56 pm ICT by IANS
Auraiya (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 7 (IANS) Shekhar Tiwari, a legislator of Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who has been arrested for the murder of a government engineer here last month, Wednesday denied any role in the crime and said he was being framed up to save “someone high-up”.Tiwari, who had earlier confessed to the crime, said in a statement before the Auraiya chief judicial magistrate’s court: “I have nothing whatsoever to do with the murder.”
Four co-accused who were also presented before the magistrate took the same stance.
Public Works Department (PWD) executive engineer M.K. Gupta was murdered here Dec 24. Tiwari and his hencemen allegedly beat him to death. Gupta paid with his life because he had refused to “contribute” Rs.5 million to Chief Minister Mayawati’s birthday celebrations this month, the opposition parties have said.
In an obvious reference to the chief minister, Tiwari told the court: “I am being implicated because the entire administrative machinery is out to save someone high up.”
“I have been framed by the police only because of mounting pressure of the media,” he said.
The court did not extend Tiwari’s police remand and he was sent to judicial custody till Jan 19, when he is to be brought before the court for the next hearing.
“The court has also rejected an application moved by the local police to get the court’s ratification of Tiwari’s statement recorded under duress by the police,” the legislator’s lawyer Devendra Tripathi told IANS.
Asked to comment on Tiwari’s earlier confession, the lawyer said: “He was forced by the police to make a confession at gunpoint, and that clearly has no meaning under law.”
“The manner in which that so-called confession was recorded on CD and copies of the same were distributed to the media shows the administration’s malafide intentions. It is now increasingly evident that the government’s whole gameplan is to get the innocent hanged and to ensure that the real culprits do not get exposed.”
