Hyderabad, Dec 24 (IANS) The 48-hour Telangana shutdown called by all-party Joint Action Committee (JAC) turned violent in Hyderabad as protesting students clashed with police at Osmania University and other places in the city.
One student was injured when police fired rubber bullets to disperse protestors at Osmania University, where an explosive situation prevails as additional police and paramilitary forces were being rushed to quell protests.
Hundreds of students gathered at the university, which was the nerve centre of pro-Telangana protests during the 11-day agitation early this month. Police also caned the students to disperse them.
Protesting the centre’s u-turn on the issue, students went on rampage since late Wednesday night burning buses and trucks.
The violence also spread to Basheer Bagh area in the heart of the city as students of Nizam College clashed with police. The students pelted stones when police stopped them from heading towards the state assembly building. The police responded with cane charge, injuring four students.
Tension prevailed in the commercial area as students returned to the college, closed its gates and raised slogans of “police go back”.
Similar scenes were witnessed at P.G. College in Masab Tank.
Paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was also rushed to L.B. Nagar area to contain violence.
There was also tension at NTR Trust Bhavan, the headquarters of main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) as students and activists of pro-Telangana groups tried to barge in demanding the party make its stand on the Telangana issue clear.
