Huntsman Named the New Ambassador to ChinaMay 16th, 2009 - 6:49 pm ICT by GD
Jon M. Huntsman Jr, the Republican Governor of Utah is the next US ambassador to China by President Obama. This announcement was made today. Huntsman, the forty nine year old moderate Republican was greatly depended upon by Obama’s predecessor George Bush too. Nine years ago Huntsman had been part of the ruling of the “Rocky Mountain corridor of states for the GOP.”
Huntsman has played important roles in previous administrations. He was an intern during the Presidency of Reagan and was the US ambassador to Singapore in Bush I’s term. Huntsman also has been the deputy trade representative of the US for the greater part of Bush II’s term. Huntsman has an excellent command of a Chinese language, Mandarin. He is really an expert on Matters relating to China.
Huntsman was born in California. His father is the billionaire businessman Jon Huntsman. Huntsman is married to Mary Kaye and they have five biological and two adopted children. Of his adopted children, one child is from China and one from India. Huntsman has been in the news for his support of the 2004 state constitutional amendment for the ban of same sex marriages. However, he has been supporting civil unions for the gays.
It is generally assumed that if Huntsman is appointed to be the Ambassador to China, his Governor’s post will be taken up by the present lieutenant governor, Gary Herbert. Herbert is more conservative than Huntsman. Herbert however would then be required to stand in a “special election” in 2010 for continuing in office for the rest of the four year term.
