Kolkata, June 2 (IANS) West Bengal’s ruling Left Front, vanquished by the opposition Trinamool Congress in the civic polls, Wednesday accepted the electoral verdict and promised to take corrective action after reviewing the reasons for its poor showing.
Left Front chairman Biman Bose, also the state secretary of Communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), said the combine’s poor performance in the civic polls does not indicate it has lost the legitimacy to run the government.

“Just because we have lost in the civic polls does not mean the alliance (Left Front) has lost its legitimacy to run the government,” he said.

“There is no question of advancing the assembly elections. We have 52,432,000 (over 5.24 crore) voters in the state, out of which 8,533,000 (over 8.53 million) took part in the civic polls, which is around 17 percent of the total electorate,” Bose told reporters at the CPI-M headquarters on Alimuddin Street.

“We are accepting the verdict of the people whole heartedly.”

Asked about the LF’s poor performance, Bose said: “We will conduct a review programme for future action. We will find out the reasons for our failure and take corrective steps.”

He said the moves of the Left would be chalked out in the interest of the people and the state.

“We will adopt programme which will give a direction to the people and repair the damages we have suffered in the civic polls,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee demanded immediate assembly polls, saying the Left Front has lost the right to govern the state after a string of electoral defeats.

“The state government has lost all right to be in power and assembly elections should be held immediately in West Bengal.”

The Trinamool Wednesday took power in the prestigious Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and it worsted the ruling Left Front in civic polls in the state.
