House Speaker refuses to say whether the charter should be amended at presentJuly 11th, 2008 - 3:07 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
House Speaker Chai Chidchob (ชัย ชิดชอบ) refuses to answer whether it is time to amend the charter. He only says he is not concerned over the present political situation.
Mr Chai says he is not aware that the People Power party will push for the charter amendment as soon as the parliament’s legislative ordinary session starts. He says it depends on the parliament when to review the constitutional amendment.
Asked on the appropriate time to amend the charter, Mr Chai refuses to answer the question as his post requires him to stay neutral in politics. He says the country’s political situation is not in crisis and the government only has slight problems such as the resignation by the foreign affairs minister which will lead to a Cabinet reshuffle.
Regarding the project to construct a new parliament, the House Speaker says the parliament will call a meeting on July 24th to discuss the location of the new parliament. However, he says the meeting will not be able to select the new location due to objections from people living in an area near the place where the government eyes to build the new parliament.
