Chandigarh, June 29 (IANS) Having ordered a ban on the use of air conditioners in government offices throughout Haryana, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Monday led by example when he ordered that the air-conditioner of his committee room be switched off too.
Hooda had come to the committee room of the Haryana civil secretariat here to chair a meeting on the functioning of the state’s power sector.

Officials told him that there was no ban on use of air-conditioners in Chandigarh - a union territory that is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana. But Hooda refused to buy the argument.

“I have ordered others not to use air-conditioners, therefore, I should myself first follow these instructions as these equally apply on me,” Hooda told the officials in the presence of state Power Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala.

The air-conditioner was switched off immediately.

Haryana had issued instructions Sunday, to be effective Monday onwards, banning the use of air-conditioners in government offices across the state. The move followed a severe power crisis in the state owing to the prevailing heat wave and lack of rainfall.
