Hooda criticises Punjab for canal controversy

Chandigarh, July 12 (IANS) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Tuesday criticised the Punjab government for raking up the controversy over the construction of an embankment along the Hansi-Butana canal in his state.

Hooda told reporters that the Punjab government was making new statements every day on the issue of strengthening of the embankment near the Hansi-Butana link canal by the Haryana government.

The Punjab government has been, in recent months, objecting to the construction of an embankment wall along the controversial canal by Haryana, saying this would lead to flooding in areas of Punjab’s Patiala district.

Hooda said the embankment was constructed in 1957 during the united Punjab province.

“It suffered breach in 1993, which was stone-pitched and strengthened later on,” he said.

“The Haryana government had issued tender in November 2010 but the Punjab government never objected to it. As the elections are round the corner in Punjab, the Punjab government is politicising the issue,” he added.

Asked about the opposition to the embankment wall by leader of opposition and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president Om Prakash Chautala, Hooda said the INLD leader had always supported Punjab and acted against the interest of Haryana’s farmers and people.
