New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) The three main contenders in the Hisar Lok Sabha by-election have accumulated large properties in the last two years, according to figures compiled by a think tank and National Election Watch.
According to figures compiled by Association for Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch, the three main contestants in the poll — Kuldeep Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress, Ajay Singh Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal, and Jai Prakash of the Congress — have all shown increase worth crores of rupees in their properties since the last election in 2009.
Bishnoi, son of former chief minister Bhajan Lal, registered a massive increase of nearly 182 percent in his properties. Bhajan Lal was the MP from this seat until his death on June 3 this year, after which the by-election was announced.
His property in 2009 was worth around Rs.17 crore, which increased to over Rs.48 crore in 2011, registering an increase of more than Rs.31 crore. Bishnoi also has one criminal case pending against him.
The HJC party has recently formed an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party and Bishnoi is among the strong contenders for the seat.
INLD contestant Ajay Singh Chautala had assets worth nearly Rs.30 crore in 2009, which has registered an increase of Rs.10 crore now. He also has two criminal cases pending against him.
Congress contestant Jai Prakash has no criminal record against him. His property has registered a massive 383 percent increase over the last declared figure.
In 2009, Prakash had assets worth only around Rs.65 lakh, whereas in 2011 he has declared his assets to be around Rs.3 crore.
Voting in the by-election in Hissar is scheduled for Thursday.
Launching its anti-corruption campaign in the district, Team Anna has distributed around 10,000 CDs carrying Hazare’s message asking people not to vote for the Congress candidate as the party does not support his version of the anti-graft bill.
