Himachal to set up centre for climate change
February 15th, 2010 - 9:49 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Feb 15 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh is all set to have a centre for climate change to enhance its preparedness for natural disasters, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal announced in Costa Rica Monday.
“We would soon have a centre for climate change for taking climate change mitigations and adopting strategies to enhance the state’s preparedness for natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, glaciers outbursts and flash floods,” an official statement quoted Dhumal as saying.
Dhumal, who is in Costa Rica along with a delegation to learn strategies adopted by that country to reduce carbon emissions, said this while speaking at a conference on environment and climate change organised jointly by the World Bank and the Costa Rica government in San Jose Sunday.
The chief minister said with the World Bank assistance, the state would formulate its master plan for environment soon. It would include vulnerability assessment and sectoral guidelines for environmental protection.
“In order to minimise emission of greenhouse gases, we are working over the expansion of rail and ropeway network,” he added.
Costa Rica has expressed its willingness to help Himachal Pradesh emerge as a carbon-neutral state by reducing greenhouse emissions and earning carbon credits.
