New Delhi, July 28 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi in a defamation case filed by his uncle V.M. Singh.
Gandhi was asked by Justice Aruna Sureesh to file his reply by July 30.
Gandhi and Singh were pitted against each other in the 2009 general elections in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. Singh, who was among the wealthiest candidates in the election, is a first cousin of Gandhi’s mother and former union minister of state Maneka Gandhi.
Singh had filed a defamation suit against Gandhi in Delhi High Court in June. He cited various instances of Gandhi using defamatory language against him during the election campaign.
The election in Pilibhit hit the headlines following Gandhi’s hate speeches against Muslims. He was jailed by the Uttar Pradesh government and charged under the National Security Act for the speeches.
