Bangalore, June 29 (IANS) The Karnataka legislature Tuesday witnessed noisy scenes as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opposed the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular moving an adjournment motion on the resignation of Lokayukta (ombudsman) N. Santosh Hegde.
Leader of the opposition in the assembly Siddaramaiah of the Congress said Hegde’s resignation was a setback in the fight against corruption.
He charged the government with creating a situation for Hegde to quit.
Hegde, a retired Supreme Court judge, quit June 23 saying the government had ignored and over-ruled his efforts to curb corruption. The resignation is with Governor H.R. Bhardwaj.
The issue was raised in the legislative council by Motamma of the Congress.
Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told the assembly the government was ready to devote two days to discuss the issue but not as an adjournment motion.
Home Minister V.S. Acharya took the same stand in the legislative council.
Congress and JD-S members trooped into the well of the assembly to protest as Speaker K.G. Bopaiah did not permit the adjournment motion to be moved.
The opposition members not allow the transaction of any business for the day in both houses of the legislature.
