Heavy firing heard near Ivory Coast president’s house
April 6th, 2011 - 5:41 pm ICT by IANSAbidjan, April 6 (IANS) Firing from heavy weapons was heard near the residence of Cote d’Ivoire’s besieged President Laurent Gbagbo, who has been confined to a bunker by rival forces since Tuesday, Xinhua cited media reports Wednesday as stating.
Gbagbo’s presidential rival Alassane Ouattara’s forces were said to have gone to fetch Gbagbo from the bunker.
The country, also known as Ivory Coast, was plunged into violence as fighting broke out between the pro-Ouattara and pro-Gbagbo fighters in the French-speaking west African nation.
On March 30, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution by 15-0 in favour of sanctions against Gbagbo, his wife and aides for refusing to quit despite losing the November 2010 presidential elections to Alassane Ouattara.
