Manmohan Singh Shimla, April 8 (IANS) Various social and political organisations in Himachal Pradesh have come out in support of social activist Anna Hazare, whose indefinite fast in New Delhi for a stronger anti-corruption Lokpal bill entered the fourth day Friday.

Ashadeep, an NGO, started a signature campaign here.

“More than 1,000 people put up their signatures in support of crusade of Hazare on the first day (Thursday) of the campaign. It will continue for the next few days,” Ashadeep president Sushil Tanwar told IANS.

He said the signature campaign would continue Friday also. “An appeal urging Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to invite Hazare for talks would be sent along with the signatures Saturday.”

The NGO also plans to hold candlelight processions and fasts in Shimla in the days to come.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) student outfit Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also came in the support of Hazare.

“The sit-in protest would continue on the campus of Himachal Pradesh University (in Shimla) and colleges across the state to support Hazare’s cause,” ABVP joint secretary Yudhunanadan said.

BJP national vice president and former state chief minister Shanta Kumar shot off a missive to party president Nitin Gadkari and senior party leader L.K. Advani, demanding a special session of parliament for passing the Lokpal bill.

“The bill will help creating a constitution body for checking corruption that is spreading like a cancer among the politicians in the country,” he said.

Social activist and Padma Shri awardee Kshama Metre has also called on people to join Hazare’s campaign against corruption.

Metre wrote to Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, asking him to support the campaign. Metre heads the Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development (CORD), an organisation that is working to uplift the social status of rural women in Dharamsala.
