Hawaii Governor Rejects ‘Same-Sex Civil Unions’ Legislation

July 8, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The Hawaiian Governor of the rightist Republican Party, Linda Lingle, has discharged her veto to a controversial legislation related to civil unions. This legislation would have bequeathed heterosexual, homosexual and lesbian duos the same advantages and rights that the Hawaiian state bestows to couples in a conjugal alliance.

Lingle’s decision to veto the legislation emerged on Tuesday, which was also the last day in which she had to either firm up or prohibit the abovementioned legislation, which had been endorsed by the state’s legislative unit in April.

The legislation, if it had received gubernatorial ratification, would have included Hawaii in the catalog of American states that basically bestow the rights of matrimony to homosexual twosomes without consenting to their matrimony itself.

The Governor asserted that the Hawaiian electorate must decide the destiny of civil unions rather than a few politicians. Lingle declared that the nature of this legislation has had a profound impact on the psyche of the Hawaiian populace and has captured their attention like no other contemporary social issue. What would be inappropriate is to permit a tiny bunch of designated officials to implement a decision on this socially significant issue.

Governor Lingle had, for numerous weeks, paid attention to the zealous standpoints of the endorsers of the legislation as well as that of its detractors. On Tuesday, in the presence of these defenders as well as critics, Governor Lingle, in a news conference, uttered her resolution to disapprove the legislation. The detractors of the bill, which consisted of religious outfits, were overjoyed on listening to the veto. They ardently articulated that this rejection is an endorsement of their belief in conventional matrimonies. However, backers of the legislation were understandably disappointed but vowed to battle politically for the legislative ratification of civil unions.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has, meanwhile, asserted that it will seek judicial intervention now since the Governor of Hawaii has discarded a civil unions legislation.

The ACLU has uttered that it will now initiate a court case. Its argument will be that the Hawaii Constitution necessitates that the state government bestow similar privileges and benefits to romantic pairs of any sexual orientation. The ACLU has declared that the state constitution has provisions that debar unfairness.

Lois Perrin, the legal director of the ACLU of Hawaii, has mentioned that Governor Lingle’s suggestion that this controversial topic be resolved by the state’s electorate via a ballot paper is unsatisfactory.
