Harry Reid WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will not resign following controversial remarks about President Obama set to be published by journalists in a book on Monday, his office said.

News reports emerged on Saturday in which Reid was quoted as saying that he called President Obama “light skinned” and that he speaks “with no Negro dialect.” Reid called Obama to apologize, which he accepted.

But Reid still faced calls to resign for the remarks, which were made during the 2008 Presidential election. Republican National Convention Chairman Michael Steele was among those calling for Reid’s resignation.

“Sen. Reid will stay in his position and is absolutely running for reelection,” a statement from his office read. “Nevadans are facing challenging times and they need the majority leader fighting for them to create jobs and get the economy back on track.”

In a statement released on Saturday, Reid apologized for offending “any and all Americans, especially African Americans.” President Obama, in a statement, said Reid has shown “passionate leadership” on social justice and said he knows what is in his heart. “As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.”
