New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Media Advisor Harish Khare, who created a flutter with his comments Monday describing the Congress as “status quoist”, issued a clarification Tuesday saying that the 125-year-old party is the nation’s “most enduring source of stability”.
“I have always believed and argued that the Congress party is the nation’s most enduring source of stability,” Khare said in a statement.
Participating in a seminar here Monday, Khare, a former journalist, had said: “Congress by nature is a status quoist, centrist party. It does not believe in conviction. The only conviction it has is to win elections.”
Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, who also attended the seminar, however disagreed with Khare’s views.
Khare said in his statement: “My observations dealt with the Digvijay Singh government in Madhya Pradesh (1993-2003). I was commenting on the inherent dilemma a political party faces in bringing about social change.”
“I attended and spoke at the seminar in my capacity as a journalist and as an analyst of the Indian political scene. But, I do recognise that these comments, made in an academic context, are subject to misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Hence, this clarification,” he said.
Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi Tuesday said: “We believe that he has already clarified his statement and we have nothing more to add.”
