Hardly a contest in Mant seat
May 30th, 2012 - 5:37 pm ICT by IANSMathura, May 30 (IANS) Though the Congress and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have fielded a joint candidate, it looks like a one-sided contest for the Mant assembly seat here in UP where a by-election is due June 12.
Samajwadi Party’s Sanjay Lathar is being challenged by 13 candidates. The Bhartiya Janata Party has not fielded a candidate.
Jayant Choudhary, son of Civil Aviation Minister and RLD leader Ajit Singh, had vacated the seat. Fourteen candidates are in the fray after the last date of withdrawal.
Lathar is believed to be a confidant of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Lathar’s main rival is Shyam Sundar Das of the Trinmool Congress who has represented the area six times. In the February assembly election, the Samajwadi candidate secured only around 1,000 votes.
