Half of MCD wards go to women, male politicians jittery
January 28th, 2012 - 12:27 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) With the Delhi Election Commission declaring the list of Municipal Council of Delhi wards reserved for women and Scheduled Caste candidates, many political bigwigs found they will not be able to contest from their usual wards in the upcoming civic elections.
The wards of Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta, opposition leader Jai Kishen Sharma (Congress) and MCD Health Committee Chairman V.K. Monga (BJP) have been reserved for women.
Besides, the R.K. Puram ward of to Deputy Mayor Anil Sharma has been reserved for a Scheduled Caste candidate.
Fifty percent of the seats have been reserved for women in the upcoming polls.
Punjabi Bagh, the ward of one the richest of MCD councilors Manjinder Singh Sirsa, has been reserved for women.
Sirsa reportedly owns assests worth over Rs.100 crore.
Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi’s Mukherjee Nagar ward has been placed in general category.
The corporations of south and north Delhi, having 104 wards each, will have 42 wards reserved for women and 20 for Scheduled Caste candidates. Of the 20 wards reserved for SCs, 10 are reserved for women from the community.
In effect, there will be at least 52 women in each corporation and if women win from any general seat the number of women will be above 50 percent.
In east Delhi corporation, with 64 wards, while 27 seats are reserved for women, 11 seats will go to SC candiates out of which 5 will be reserved for women.
There are total 272 seats. Polls are likely in April.
