Half-a-million crowd expected in Karnataka for Third Front rallyMarch 11th, 2009 - 8:59 pm ICT by IANS
Bangalore, March 11 (IANS) Around half-a-million people are expected to attend a rally the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) is hosting in Karnataka Thursday to mark the “official launch” of the proposed Third Front, a party leader said Wednesday.
Leaders from various political parties, not affiliated to groupings led by the Congress or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), arrived here Wednesday to attend the rally at Dobbaspet, about 60 km from Bangalore.
The JD-S, headed by former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda, says all arrangements have been made for the mega rally ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in April-May.
“We are expecting 500,000 people at the rally. All arrangements at the venue are complete,” JD-S spokesperson Y.S.V. Datta told IANS.
“We had asked for 3,000 buses from KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) but have been given only 1,000. But we have made arrangements for private buses and other vehicles so that people from all over Karnataka can attend the rally,” he said.
The rally will be addressed by Gowda, Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat, Communist Party of India general secretary A.B. Bardhan, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu, Telengana Rasthra Samiti chief K. Chandrashekar Rao’s son Taraka Rama Rao, AIADMK MP L. Maithreyan, and leaders of the Revolutionary Socialist Party and Forward Bloc, Datta said.
These leaders will have a breakfast meeting at a hotel and then proceed together in a bus to Dobbaspet, he said.
Aked whether the meeting will decide a structure for the Third Front, Datta said “Yes, it will be discussed and may be finalised.”
A JD-S advertisement in several dailies published from Bangalore read: “Fed Up With This & That, People Now Want The Third Force! Official Launch of The Third Front.”.
The advertisement said the Third Front was being launched “against the pro-rich economic policies of the national parties like the Congress and the BJP, against the growth of communal and fascist force and (for) determined and committed to the cause of pro-farmer, pro-poor, pro-worker, pro-OBC (Other Backward Classes), pro-Dalit, pro-women, pro-minorities and pro-youth.”
