Gujjars reject report on centre-Kashmir ties
December 24th, 2009 - 6:55 pm ICT by IANSJammu, Dec 24 (IANS) Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir Thursday reacted angrily to the report of the fifth working group on more autonomy for the state, which keeps the scheduled tribes out of the purview of reservation.
The recommendations of the fifth working group, headed by retired Kashmir High Court chief justice Saghir Ahmad, were reported in the media Thursday, a day after it submitted the report to the government here.
“It is one-sided, illogical and against the interests of Gujjars, who constitute 25 percent of the population of the state,” said Shamsher Ali Boken, president of Jammu and Kashmir Gujjars and Bakerwal Forum, a representative organisation of the nomadic tribes in the state.
He said that the working group has done “injustice” to the tribal communities.
