cristFlorida, Apr 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Governor Charlie Crist vetoed the merit pay bill that had been creating a whole lot of problems among the school teachers. Needless to say, the measure taken by the governor became much approved by the teachers, for the passing of the bill would have meant a drastic effect on their paychecks. The proposed bill stated that the teachers would be paid in accordance to the performances of the students, that is, the lower the quality of performance, the lower the pay for the concerned teacher. Naturally, when the governor vetoed the bill, which had the effect of stalling it, the measure was hugely approved.

Teachers from all across the state had spoken to Governor Charlie Crist, asking him to consider his decision regarding the bill. Naturally, they were elated when their pleas got a positive response, and there were reports of teachers celebrating everywhere. According to most of the teachers, they found the provisions of the bill to be unfair because it would not have taken into account the fact that they had toiled hard to get their degrees, and all their qualifications would have come to nothing. However, while they are happy that the bill got stalled, they are also aware that it might come into effect in the future.

On the other hand, the veto passed by Governor Charlie Crist has not been approved on all quarters. The President of Associated Industries of Florida, Barney Bishop, feels that the bill ought to have been passed, as educational degrees and seniority should not be the only criteria for appointment of a teacher, and that ability to impart knowledge should also be part of the package.
