Government’s heavy legislative agenda grounded (to go with parliament losses story)
December 6th, 2010 - 8:49 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) The government had a heavy legislative agenda on its hands for the winter session which ends Dec 13 but has not been able to make much headway due to the continuing logjam in parliament.
According to information complied by PRS Legislative, an independent research initiative that tracks functioning of parliament, the government agenda included 23 pending bills for consideration and passing, eight new Bills listed for introduction, consideration and passing and 24 new bills for introduction.
The bills listed for introduction included the National Identification Authority of India Bill, 2010, Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment at Workplace Bill, 2010 and the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India, Bill, 2010.
The bills listed for consideration and passing included the Prevention of Torture Bill, 2010, the Seeds Bill, 2004 and the Commercial Divisions of High Courts Bill, 2009.
Parliament officials said that apart form the bills relating to the financial business that were passed amid din, Lok Sabha has passed only two bills in the 17 days the House has met so far in the winter session. The two bills, that were passed Nov 9, relate to the changing the name of Orissa to Odisha and its language to Odia.
They said only four financial bills were passed by Rajya Sabha amid din since the winter session began Nov 9.
