Government wins trust motion by 253-232 in electronic voting (Lead)

New Delhi, July 22 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government Tuesday appeared to have won the crucial confidence vote in parliament with results after electronic voting showing 253 votes in favour of the motion, and 232 against with two abstentions in a house with 487 members present. The electronic voting was followed by manual voting with members recording ayes and noes on slips of paper.
Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said the final results were yet to be declared, but MPs began crowding around a smiling prime minister and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to congratulate them.
