Government should decide on Gujjar issue: BJPJune 3rd, 2008 - 10:47 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, June 3 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday said it was for the central government to take a decision on granting Scheduled Tribe status to Gujjars who have launched an agitation in Rajasthan demanding affirmative action. “A decision resolving the conflict has to be taken by the centre,” BJP leader L.K. Advani said at function organized by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham).
“The issue should not be viewed as a political game between the centre and the state governments,” he said.
The Rajasthan government would provide all the necessary statistics and facts to the central government to help it resolve the crisis, he replied when asked about the impact of the Gujjar agitation on the country’s economy and its international image.
Advani, however, said that he was hopeful the Rajasthan government would be able to control the situation.
The Gujjars have been demanding a shift from the category of Other Backward Classes, or OBCs, to that of Scheduled Tribes, or STs, that will give them easier access to government jobs and education.
