Government didn’t agree to life term for corruption: Kejriwal
June 23rd, 2011 - 12:38 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 22 (IANS) Civil society member Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday said that they had proposed that the maximum punishment for corruption should be life imprisonment but the government didn’t agree and offered to reduce it to 10 years.
Addressing a press conference, he said the civil society had said that the Lokpal would be required to provide protection to whistle blowers.
“We had also recommended that high court will set up additional benches to hear the cases of corruption so that all the cases can be disposed of. The government did not agree to it,” he said
He said the government’s bill to protect whistle blowers is “useless”.
Kejriwal said: “The law made by the government on the protection of whistle blowers is useless to such an extent that even Jayanthi Natarajan, who is heading the parliamentary standing committee on this matter, lambasted the report which was submitted to her by the committee on June 9.”
“It was decided in the committee meeting held on May 23 that Lokpal will be given the duty of providing protection to whistle blowers. However, it did not happen, ” he added.
