Gordon Brown officially resigns as Britain’s Prime Minister

LONDON (BNO NEWS) — Gordon Brown on Tuesday offered his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II as Britain’s Prime Minister, which she accepted. He also resigned as Labour Party leader, effective immediately.
The announcement follows a day of increased rumors that Brown would submit his resignation. Earlier, the Liberal Democrats told Sky News that they were ‘very close’ to reaching a deal to form a new British government.
Brown visited the Queen shortly after announcing his intend to resign. After a brief meeting, the Queen accepted his resignation, a spokesman said.
“The Right Honourable Gordon Brown had an Audience of The Queen this evening and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which Her Majesty accepted,” a notice from Buckingham Palace read.
It now appears to be certain that Conservatives leader David Cameron will become the new prime minister of Britain, who was en-route to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening to meet with the Queen. The Conservatives won last week’s election but failed to secure a majority.
Brown’s resignation on Tuesday marks the end of the Labour Party’s 13-year hold on power.
