Sioux City, Dec 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Frontrunner Newt Gingrich was clearly the target during the GOP debate on Thursday. Gingrich has made a remarkable comeback and the other contenders tried to slow his momentum ahead of the Iowa caucus.

Gingrich is currently in a three-race combat with Ron Paul and Mitt Romney with just three weeks to the Iowa vote. Iowa will be voting on the 3rd of January and a lead will serve as a good psychological edge for any of the contestants.

Michelle Bachmann who led the straw polls in Iowa about five months ago led the attack on Gingrich. She repeatedly attacked Gingrich for being a Washington lobbyist saying that he received up to $1.6 million in payments from Freddie Mac.

Bachmann finally told the supporters that, “We can’t have as our nominee for the Republican Party someone who continues to stand for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. They need to be shut down, not built up.”

Gingrich has promised no attack on his fellow contestants and that was what he seemed to be doing. Ahead of the vote in Iowa, latest polls show that the Gingrich will win with a single percentage point over Paul. Gingrich is leading the other packs with 22 percent while Paul has 21 percent.
