Goa speaker wants financial autonomy for assembly complex care
March 17th, 2011 - 3:01 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, March 17 (IANS) Goa legislative assembly Speaker Pratapsingh Rane Thursday demanded financial autonomy for the maintenance of the assembly complex, complaining that the lifts in the main building failed repeatedly.
Speaking at the beginning of Question Hour, Rane said he had been complaining to the state public works department (PWD) for over a year about the non-functioning lifts, but to no avail.
“I want to complain to the PWD minister. The lifts in the assembly complex are not working. Why is this happening… I have been complaining for a year. What is this,” asked an exasperated Rane.
The speaker asked Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to allow financial autonomy to his office for maintenance of the assembly complex.
“If you cannot maintain it, you must give the assembly financial autonomy for such maintenance,” Rane said.
Leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar pitched in and complained of the erratic water supply in the complex.
“There is no water in the assembly for most of the time. The toilets do not work very often,” Parrikar said.
The state assembly was shifted some years back from the summer palace of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur in Panaji to a modern state-of-art assembly complex in Porvorim, a satellite township near the capital.
