Goa Congress candidate being probed for model code violation
January 9th, 2012 - 11:49 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Panaji, Jan 9 (IANS) Congress candidate Dayanand Narvekar, a former vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is being probed for violating the code of conduct by distributing cricket kits to voters ahead of the March 3 Goa assembly elections, poll officials said Monday.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has confirmed that they are probing the case against Dayanand Narvekar, the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president and aspirant for the Aldona assembly election constituency ticket.
“We are investigating the case. Generally the district election officer or superintendent of police investigate such complaints,” ECI nodal officer for the Goa polls Durga Prasad said, adding that the complaint said that Narvekar was distributing cricket kits to voters through cricket clubs registered with the GCA.
In his complaint to the ECI, former GCA official Shekhar Salkar said that the distribution of kits amounted to luring of cricket loving voters, especially when the code of conduct is in place.
Narvekar has courted controversy on several occasions as the GCA president. He was booked last year for forging his son’s birth certificate to enable him to play in specific age brackets for the state team.
