The much awaited wait of all Ghanaian ended on Saturday when the U.S. President, Barrack Obama, at last landed in the capital city of the country, Accra. According to reports the U.S. President came along with his wife, Michelle Obama. They received a warm welcome at the airport where they were greeted by John Atta Mills, the President of Ghana along with his wife Ernestina Naadu Mills.
There has been a lot of buzz among the general public in Ghana who poured out their excitement, as the capital city was flooded with a large number of well wishers and journalists. The reason for the excitement is also due to the fact that after taking his office this is Barrack Obama’s first visit to sub-Saharan Africa. It was indeed a warm welcome as the Accra Airport was adorned with new flags. Major routes of the city has been showcasing billboards that depicted the picture of the Ghanaian president along Barrack Obama, with the attachment of proclamation “Partnership for Change” and the phrase ‘Akwaaba’ which means welcome home.
Already speculations have started over the reason for the visit of the U.S. President. Prior to this visit, Obama had indicated that his purpose of visit is to stress on the democratic principles that are needed by Ghana right now and make it more inclined towards it so that it brings an overall prosperity for the country. He has been quoted saying to ‘AllAfrica.com’, “This isn’t just some abstract notion that we’re trying to impose on Africa. The African continent is a place of extraordinary promise as well as challenges. We’re not going to be able to fulfill those promises unless we see better governance.”
It is now to see how fruitful Obama’s visit turns up to.
