German Chancellor Angela Merkel States Multicultural Society has Failed
October 19th, 2010 - 2:39 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonOct 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the attempts by the country to adopt a multicultural society has “utterly failed”, and she urges immigrants to learn German and take on their Christian values.
It is the first time in which Merkel has weighed in on the heated debate which was started when a board member of the central bank stated that Germany was being made “more stupid” by poorly educated and non-productive Muslims.
“Multikulti”, the concept that “we are now living side by side and are happy about it,” does not work, Merkel told a meeting of younger members of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party at Potsdam near Berlin, according to Yahoo News.
“The approach has failed, totally” she stated, and added that any immigrants will need to adopt the German culture as well as their values. “Subsidising immigrants” isn’t sufficient, Germany has the right to “make demands” on them, she explained, “Such as mastering the language of Goethe and abandoning practices such as forced marriages.”
A recent Friedrich Ebert Foundation study shows that a third of Germans feel that their country is being “overrun by foreigners” and that these foreigners should be sent home when their are already not enough jobs for the citizens of their country. Almost sixty percent of the people who were polled felt that the almost four million Muslims which reside in Germany should have the religious practices curbed.
“We feel tied to Christian values. Those who don’t accept them don’t have a place here,” the chancellor announced.
