Lucknow, May 30 (IANS) The entire Gandhi family will attend the final match of the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Cricket Tournament, organized by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, in Amethi June 2. Players of the Amethi cricket team, which is a finalist in the tournament, said they had met Rahul during his visit May 16, and he assured them that his entire family would be there to witness the match.

“This would also include Priyanka Gandhi and her two children,” Sonu Singh, captain of the Amethi team, told IANS by phone Friday. Amethi would play team from Tiloi village in the finals.

“We had, in fact, requested Rahulji to invite the entire Indian cricket team and film star Shah Rukh Khan when he asked who all we would wish to come,” said team manager Brijendra Shukla.

Some 1,857 teams from as many villages took part in the tournament organized at 127 venues. Rahul, who is member of parliament from Amethi, provided the playing kits for the matches.

Congress sources claim the tournament’s purpose was to encourage cricket talent among the rural areas, but they concede the effort had helped improve Rahul’s image among the youth in his constituency.
