Gadkari condemns Amethi re-naming

New Delhi, July 3 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari has criticised the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to name a new district, comprising Amethi parliamentary constituency, as Chattrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar.
“It is a decision aimed at electoral gains and vote banks. Nothing to do with the development of the area or the district,” Gadkari told IANS.
He recalled that BJP governments in the state had formed many new districts. “Those decisions were aimed at the development of the area and the state,” he said.
On Thursday, the state cabinet decided to form a new district comprising five tehsils - Amethi, Gauriganj, Musafirkhana of Sultanpur district and Salon and Tiloi tehsils of Rae Bareli district.
The Congress had been demanding the naming of the district as Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.
“We are not interested in the blame game between the Congress and the BSP. But the decision to re-name Amethi is purely political,” said Gadkari.
Amethi constituency is represented by All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi. It was earlier represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi, father Rajiv Gandhi, uncle Sanjay Gandhi and great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru.
